He started our at Preston School of Industry in Ione CA, part of the Cal Youth Authority (notice CYA), then moved on to San Quentin and federal prison, all before age 21.
We (CYA) used to count I’m as one of our success stories.

He threw a big party and invited us and our families to drop in (most likely to prevent me from raising hell about the noise, etc.). .......My little sister was 14 at the time and was hoping Johnny Crawford would be there, as she thought he was so cute. ...The director called Johnny’s home in CA from the bedroom phone and the call was transferred to the barn. The director left my sister in the bedroom and closed the door so that she and Johnny could talk. ...Johnny was spending the night in the barn because his horse sick and that’s why he wasn’t in Dallas. Sister talked with him for almost an hour and was thrilled.
