With everyone and anyone on the planet riding the wave into America during Barry and Val’s new “Humanitarian Tragedy” program, I expected Ebola to make it’s entry here any day now.
And most people won't be prepared for a quarantine situation. Most Americans don't have more than a few days of food in their homes; most less than that. And most have no respiratory protection on hand at home at all, not even a box of N95 masks.
This disease has the potential to decimate the American population, if it gets out, and is as virulent as it looks to be.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

There’s evidence HIV existed in the wild for a century before it had an outbreak large enough to get it out of small remote towns.
And here we are. Ebola doing what it can to do the same.

Even the insects are infected: An amateur beekeeper in Burlington, Vt., last summer found honeybees infested with parasites that cause the insects to act erratically and eventually kill them. Those are words one never wants to see in the same sentence. Ebola and out of control. I remember learning about these things in Med School and it is scary stuff.

What a great way to bring it to the US. Expose the kids crossing the border to infect our population. I’m not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but can figure the terrorists are already planning on doing something like this. I hope I’m wrong.
There are a bunch of very powerful strikes against Ebola in the US: good hygiene and sanitation, paranoia, cultural isolationism, first rate epidemic response and effective quarantine, good communications, and efficient body disposal.
Compare this to Africa: little to no understanding of hygiene, poor sanitation, indifference to most disease, families living in close quarters, ordinary hospital response to epidemics with no quarantine, poor communications and lower literacy levels, and ritually playing around with cadavers before family burial.
Oh, and they also have stupidly high rates of AIDS, so lots of human petri dishes unprotected by functional immune systems.
(CNN) June 23, 2014 — The deadly Ebola virus outbreak in West Africa has hit “unprecedented” proportions, according to relief workers on the ground.
“The epidemic is out of control,” Dr. Bart Janssens, director of operations for Doctors Without Borders, said in statement.
There have been 567 cases and 350 deaths since the epidemic began in March, according to the latest World Health Organization figures.
