How many stars are in the solar system?

I got this email from a relative. Scary how uneducated some "educated" people are. These are middle class 30s people with good jobs, a mix of high school and college graduates.

I was at my friend’s house last night and there were a bunch of people over.

It was really nice out so we stayed outside most of the time. When the stars started to appear I used an app on my phone that lets you look up in the sky and it identifies what stars/planets/constellations you’re aiming the phone at.

One thing lead to another and a person made a comment about “all the stars in our solar system”. I said there was only one star and that there were hundreds of billions of stars in our galaxy. She was completely confused.

So I went around and asked people “how many stars in our solar system” – not a single person answered ONE.

And one tried to convince me that the sun revolves around the earth. She started to get angry when I kept disagreeing with her and she told me that just because that’s what science says doesn’t mean it’s true.

So this morning I went into work and asked everyone at work how many stars are in our solar system – I got a bunch of “you’ve got to be kidding me, I don’t know” or “Hmmm… 15?”

And someone even said “the sun isn’t a star”.

I’m just completely speechless!

Noah’s flood story was most likely based on when the Med flooded.
There is no geological record for a world wide flood 20k years ago.
There is record of a large age flood which caused some of the western USA structures.

It is simple math to calculate how much water would be required to raise sea levels 100ft.

Don’t take this personally but I’ve taken Geology, Chemical Engineering and Electronics Engineering. Just retired after being in it for 30 years.

Two thoughts are going through my mind. I agree, 1.7 with the Jupiter could be a failed star. When I had astronomy in college it was a real gut course. One of the hardest I had in school, honestly. I loved it though.

My second thought is rather silly, what would Giorgio think? Are we getting dumber because of aliens? Nah! ((Giorgio always makes me giggle)

My third grade teacher taught us that the earth rocked back and forth to create the seasons, as in, the axis of rotation actually shifted back and forth.

She was a nice lady and a good teacher, but I use that illustration with my kids to show that they shouldn’t take everything an authority figure tells them at face value. When in doubt, ask questions of other sources.

The really amazing fact is that scientist have been modeling the first 1/1000 of a second of the big bang and have determined that a great deal of mass was required for all of the elements in our periodic table to exists. In fact, it takes the mass of every star to make this happen. So every star was required for you and I to exist as we do today - Amazing!

How did people like this survive twenty years ago when they had to think on their own?

Given the nature of the “Kessel Run,” it actually makes sense. However, I’ve no doubt that’s an Expanded Universe alteration in order to save Lucas from himself.

I think one of the Timothy Zahn Star Wars novels attempted to spackle over that faux pas. Something about the Falcon being fast enough to allow its pilot to fly a shorter course around a gravity well.

I'm amazed by people with BS degrees who do not know the sun rises in the east, and sets in the west, who cannot figure out which way is north and which way is south.

I knew these things as a young child. They are not difficult lessons.

Exactly. But it isn’t causing global warming. There is absolutely no connection. :)

We had to do the conversion when we created the customer site set up documentation for our computer equipment. We were an international company.

I had a really hard time explaining to someone that the dark side of the moon isn’t always dark.
