Yep. I have read where earlier in the war, others travelling from the Southwest Pacific to the States relayed messages from him that he had no interest in political office. That sort of closed my mind to the subject. Evidently, he had a more recent change of heart.
Unless it was some sort of a write-in-ballot campaign, it's hard to imagine what would cause a person that hadn't read American newspapers or listened to American radio in years think he had a chance.
