Thanks for the post.

The reporter asked a good question about women who want a baby now, but who may not be able to have one later. Her lame response which starts with, “oh you do ask hard questions ...” is revealing. As a rule, the thinking of (liberal) intellectuals is superficial, and that is the case here.

Nobel prize winning economist Joseph Schumpeter defined intellectuals as people who have an interest in matters for which they have no responsibility. This woman is interested in making babies. At her age, she can no longer make babies, but she is keenly interested in the decision of fertile women, who are the ones who are responsible for their individual decisions.

Schumpeter said that as intellectuals lack responsibility, they also lack day to day involvement. As a result, they fail to realize when their policies go astray. True enough. But I prefer to focus on the fact that their thinking is superficial from the start. This woman refuses to think about those women who want a baby now who will be unable to have a baby in ten year’s time. She would be happy to legislate their rights away.

As a rule, when someone says We (the government) should do this, or we should do that, the same kind of superficial thinking is taking place.
