Cecil B. DeMille’s “The Ten Commandments”

I had a private conservation with Cecil DeMille in his hotel room right after The Ten Commandments came out.

I was a chaperon at a senior dance at this hotel and was on the mezzanine floor with some seniors and there was a door with a sign stating DeMille was in residence there. A senior knocked on the door and they fled, leaving me standing there. He opened the door and I made an apology for the knock on the door.

He invited me in and we had coffee and talked about the making of the Ten Commandments. He was speaking at a church in that city the next day and invited me to go, so I did.

He told me in our conservation that he tried to make the Ten Commandments as honestly as he could to tell the story as it happened.

Agreed. Every time the Ten Commandments are on its like a special event for me. It still has that special magic even after 50 years. I can only imagine how much it wowed the audiences when it was released in 1956.

Blame it on getting old tho that is a lot better than not getting old. As soon as I saw Demetrius I knew that was the right name.

Ben Hur: A Tale of the Christ (1925)

I liked that one also. It was reverent, and you could tell how always avoided showing a direct picture/image of Christ.

Victor Mature played the defiantly musky slave Demetrius.
And Richard Burton as the noble Wohman. I mean, Roman.

As a child when it came out, I thought “David and Bathsheba” was well done. Also, “Sampson and Delilah.” But “The Robe” was my favorite.

I’d say the 10 Commandments. I’ve always enjoyed Edward G. Robinson’s performance as Dathan, especially.

Jesus of Nazareth is a great movie with a great cast.

As for religious-themed but not biblical, The Apostle remains my favorite. Robert Duvall should have won Best Actor that year!

Jesus of Nazareth and (though it’s not actually a Biblical movie, the background story is): Ben Hurr.

I loved The Robe best (the music was so sentimentally beautiful) and the Ten Commandments. However, I do love the music in Jesus Christ Superstar.

Here is some interesting Trivia about the Ten Commandments:

“You sure did get around during your lifetime.”

I traveled the south of France with John F. Kennedy's true love.

I was kissed on the cheek by Hugh Grant not long before he was caught with a prostitute in a car in California.

I was in a college English class with pianist Van Cliburn and he showed me where he copied a paper from the encyclopedia and the next day the English teacher praised his paper and he looked at me and smiled. He would play the piano while we waited for the bus.

and more...

There are some good ones, but I am sure no one has heard of this one, “A Flame in the Wind” which was produced by Bob Jones University, about the Inquisition.
