Man started fire to burn bugs in 'deplorable' apartment, report states

A man pulled from a fire on Sunday night told authorities that he started the blaze accidentally — while trying to burn the bugs in his apartment, the Orlando Police Department said.

Orlando police and fire crews were called to the fire at an apartment building on Lakeview Street, near Lake Concord just north of downtown Orlando, about 11:30 p.m.

The man was rescued from his burning apartment and taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center to be treated for smoke inhalation, according to Orlando police.

An officer who checked the apartment afterward described its "deplorable" living conditions in his report:

"There was trash and empty beer cans covering the majority of the floor in the living area and the kitchen," the officer wrote in his report. "The bedroom where most of the fire damage occurred was also filled with trash and cans."

The man, whose name has not been released, told authorities he started the fire "to burn the bugs in his home and computer," according to the police report released Monday.

Okay, so a squirrel rope dart is no match for a flame cannon...

The bugs are bad here.

Been to Florida. The bugs and humidity are too much for me. I will never go live south of the Mason dixon line.

I've heard of this happening by accident, where people will buy those aerosol "bug bombs" but they then decide to use WAY MORE than the instructions call for, and they ignore the instructions to turn off the pilot lights in their furnaces and water heaters.

The pilot flames then ignite the fumes, and you've got a home explosion!

One of the funniest jokes I ever heard was someone talking about the giant "cockroaches" (palmeto bugs, actually) in Florida. The joke was, "They're big. And TOUGH! Don't try to kill them with a brick! Because all you'll have is a big, pissed off bug, and now he's armed with a brick!

Always thinking with their stomachs.
Never recalling where they stashed the snacks.

If you keep your house clean and spray occassionally you really dont need to burn your house down.

We may have bugs and snakes and big ass spiders but at least we dont have the taxes and socialism that the north east has.

Need the $15,000 machine that will heat the room to 150 degrees, to kill the bugs. My friend has the machine for one of his businesses.

I'm sure there is a reason that Florida spends the most of any state on police as a percentage of revenue. It sure has a F'ked up judicial system given the Trayvon Martin case. I do remember years ago that the problem included murdering many European visitors to Miami.

All roses down there in Florida, eh?
