I worked with a bunch of these H1B visa guys who were getting paid HALF what i was

I saw that back in the '90s when on contact in Texas. There were a lot of Indians showing up and one day I got into a conversation with one of the wives, who was also a programmer.

She said that she would be glad when her husband finished his current gig as he was working 60-70 hours a week. Now overtime for U.S. contractors was just straight pay since our rate was so high, but we rarely got any - all the extra hours went to the Indians.

I mentioned that she ought to be happy with all that overtime and she said no, they all were on salary, and at the end of their six-month gig, they got a $500 bonus in lieu of any overtime. The trick was that their companies would work Hell out of them, but only bill the U.S. companies for a 40-hour week.

Lessee, hire an American and pay him overtime, or hire an H1-B and only have to pay for 40 hours, no matter how long he worked. Decisions, decisions.

I felt bad for some- they were doing the same thing at one of my companies. The agency would pay the employee for 40 hours but bill the client for 50 or 60.

I told them to tell the agency that if they did not pay them for hours over 40 they would stop working hours over 40 (or at least stop billing) It worked.

And they started putting in all kinds of hours. But the company was not seeing a much hogher cost for them, with little additional output, and poor quality work, so they eventually got rid of them all.

Some of them were the hardest workign people I ever met, but they were just not good at what they were doing. The brain drain is complete from India. Universities there seem to be just handing out degrees to anyone who wants to come to american and be a computer programmer.

Now, most of the ones I run into are running the contracting agencies instead of working actually writing software.
