It’s not that at all. Right now, the narrative is that these dogs are harmless and are victims of ‘bad press’. So well-meaning people are adopting them, believing that (if they’re raised right) they’re no more harmful than a Labrador.

I believe that the vast majority of the pits out there are good dogs than do well with a decent upbringing. But that 1% can be fatal.

In my part of the country, pit bull owners are just about the only irresponsible dog owners. So unless dogs are regularly shipped in from the South, Puerto Rico or the Midwest, they are the only dogs available at the local pound.

IMO that’s just a terrible shame. Far better that all surrendered pit bulls get put down and more appropriate dogs are spared in order to be given out to adoptive families in their place.

The last time I looked at our county shelter’s listings, most of the dogs were listed as part: Border Collie, Australian Shepherd, German Shepherd and Lab. Oddly enough, the pictures all revealed short haired dogs with large, broad, thick skulls, short pointed ears, tails with very short hair, etc.
