30 years ago, I worked for a country veterinarian who told me then that he wished the breed would be eradicated. He'd done years of study on the ‘pit’ bull terrier and said going back to the foundation of what we had even back then, there was far too much cur dog bred into the line. That vet passed away years ago but I can hear him now, ‘I told you so’.

This breed’s instincts are primal and just underneath the loving family dog demeanor. It can never be trusted.

I never cease to be amazed at the number of people who believe this breed is gentle and great with kids so long as the dog is treated properly. Every time something like this happens they come out f the woodwork screaming “The owner has to have mistreated the dog or taught it to be vicious.” Heck, Rachel Ray is among this group.

How come I never see articles like this associated with golden retrievers or collies? Those are the kind of dogs to have as pets for children.

I like dogs as much as anybody else but would never have a pit bull in a home with a 5-year-old child.

Normal dogs see their loving family as part of the pack, members they would never harm and would rather die FOR.

Pits are anything but normal dogs.

I have to wonder if the child's mom was menstruating and that was the catalyst that switched the family pet into a monster?

...that and the fact the father/pack-leader was not home at the time.

The story doesn't say how long they had the dog, its sex or the other dog's sex.

I have little experience with pit bulls but I have owned a pure blood English Setter. After centuries of breeding a dog to hunt birds you get a dog whose entire existence revolves around bird hunting. Just opening the gun cabinet would work him into a frenzy. I honestly think he would have hunted until he dropped from exhaustion if allowed to. If the same effort goes into breeding a dog to fight the results should be obvious.

Pit bulls are thug accessories. Their owners tend to be lower class, the type of nasty people you know are lower class even when unaccompanied by the beasts.

Every time we go to the dog park the other dog owners are on pins and needles when one shows up. One got into a fight with a smaller dog last year, the owner of the (smaller) dog tried to break it up. He succeeded, but not without losing a finger to the pit.

I hate the breed.
