I understand that it was Allen Klein, a disgruntled ex-manager of the Rolling Stones who owns pre-1970 copyrights that initiated the lawsuit against The Verve, but the Stones themselves were silent on the matter.
They could have been a little more outspoken about it if they disagreed with the lawsuit.

I've posted Bittersweet Symphony to the FReeper Canteen numerous times. It's great music, unusual for the era. I've got a pretty good ear and fail to see the similarity, myself. I knew of the lawsuit and loss of royalties, but viewed it more as bumping The Verve than lining the pockets of some second-hand money grubber.
