Cripes!...back in the early 60's, Weekly Reader was all over this guy.

"Oh, wow!","A really black man playing a game I know nothing about."

They didn't teach soccer until high school - two days tops.

Why is Pele famous? We know why.

I knew nothing about soccer, much less Pele, until 1970, when an older friend suggested that I fly him to Mexico City to see the World Cup.
We were there for the semi-final and the final game between Brazil and Italy. I admit that it was quite exciting and infective. Pele certainly earned his reputation.
We also rented a car and toured the area south of Mexico city, as far south as Taxco...one of my greatest trips.
