Microsoft adopts Mantle but calls it DX12

GDC 2014: Completely different because it is not called Mantle, just ask MS PR

Just as SemiAccurate predicted months ago, Microsoft has adopted AMD’s Mantle but are now calling it DX12. The way they did it manages to pull stupidity from the jaws of defeat by breaking compatibility in the name of lock-in.

The impetus for all of this mess is the dire situation the XBox One is in. You might recall that it is woefully underpowered compared to the Sony PS4, has roughly 50% less shader performance, far lower memory bandwidth, significantly harder to program for, and tools described by many several as “a mess”. Sony suffers from none of this and is hammering Microsoft in the sales race, to the point where many are openly wondering if the XBox One has failed.

As a gamer I can only say that Microsoft completely messed up the new console launch. Aside from the referenced under powered issues, there is the higher price, AND required Kinect camera most gamers do not want. Then there’s the bonus of the NSA spy issues and this blasted camera is like letting them into your family room. Insane. The simple truth is, Microsoft fell prone to hubris and forced a produce they said you wanted, NOT what the consumer (gamers in this case) wanted. Sony did everything right particularly their background research into what game designers sought as well as consumers of the console market. Now, want to talk about the Windows 8 debacle...?

There's a lot to be said for planning — after all, a couple hours of planning can save you weeks of coding.

So it appears that Intel and NVIDIA may be waiting on DX12 or OpenGL...

That’s the Microsoft business plan. Next step should be, if the product fails, either buy out the competition or litigate them into dust.

I have both a PS4 and XB1, and the PS4 has a FAR better UI, and is much faster in that regard. Thus far, they are about the same with running games....for now.

I’m just glad that Sony is showing a willingness to listen to customers, after years of nonsense. I would like to see them bounce back.

MSFT also managed to rape their own PC gaming in the process. Mantle is an Open API they'll be adopting.

Here's at least one reason why: Check out the 'Star Swarm' stress test comparing the Oxide Games' Nitrous engine demo on AMD's Mantle versus Microsoft's DirectX 11. Nothing less than a generational leap in graphics tech for desktop gamers comparing tech vs. tech in a graphics app that's built from the ground up to use Mantle vs. DirectX 11 that's merely 'compliant' with it. See the video:

Steam Community Hub -- Star Swarm Stress Test

(Ghastly silence from the legion of PC gamers who mocked the new MacPro's dual AMD D700 graphics cards rather than going with NVidia; "LOL! Those aren't GAMER cards, they're WORKSTATION cards!")

What is it going to mean for Microsoft when they don't even rule PC gaming market share anymore?

This is a company getting nibbled to pieces by ever-increasing numbers of piranha.

I agree. Sony completely screwed up with PS3, but looks to have rebound with PS4. However, I don’t think MS screwed up as badly as this article suggests. Never Ever has the most powerful console ever won in the console wars race. The XBOX ONE is plenty strong enough to give gamers what they want AND it has great TV integration via the HDMI port.

If specs won the war the Dreamcast, N64 and XBOX (first one) would be king.

Long live the N64! Long live GoldenEye 007! Mine still works like a champ!

MS will sell a pile of xbones with TitanFall.

Microsoft doesn’t have to worry about losing PC gamers to Apple, after all AMD/ATI cards fit in PCs just fine. Microsoft will rule the PC gamer market until game developers start supporting Linux.

“Never Ever has the most powerful console ever won in the console wars race.”

As they say, there’s a first time for everything. It’s been pretty amazing that straight power hasn’t resulted in first place in the past, but there are other factors. Today, it sure looks like everything is lining up perfectly for Sony...I certainly plan on picking up a PS4 and not an XB1.

Most telling, my oldest son is a hard-core Xbox fan and couldn’t care less about the XB1 so far.

I’m not anticipating the loss of gamers to Apple, just that it will happily be that games will be supported on any desktop environment rather than dictated by MSFT. As it ought to be.

Consoles? Schmonsoles.
