SHTF Lessons From Venezuela

So the people of all classes now find themselves in a situation in which electric power is no longer reliable, blackouts are common, and diseases that were eliminated are returning. Inflation can run up to 50% per month, rendering the Bolivar fiat currency nearly worthless. Since the government had forcefully expropriated (through the Venezuelan socialist version of eminent domain) huge tracts of productive domestic livestock and then given it "to the poor" who didn't know how to farm it, domestic food production crashed. Food was then imported, using dollars. Once inflation soared, the government clamped down on the ability to purchase dollars. This had repercussions throughout the economy. Nearly all medicines are imported, bought with dollars. Hospitals and clinics are now almost completely devoid of medicines. Patients with chronic diseases, such as diabetes or heart disease, cannot get their medicines. Cancer patients cannot receive treatment and are dying. Food supplies are dwindling and what food there is has become expensive. Shop shelves are bare, and long lines form whenever food becomes available.

“As well as several courses of Cipro in the fridge.” I have Cipro in the fridge, too.

Can you freeze it?

“Can you freeze it?” (Cipro)

I looked this up and found a report from the US Defense Dept. who had the FDA to study shelf life of medicines and they specifically tested and reported on Cipro in this report. This is part of what they said about Cipro, plus I put the link below so you can read the whole report. Lower down in the report, they store these meds in a cool room but not a freezing temperature. The idea is to keep out moisture, and freezing might include moisture as a cool temp. wouldn't.

In this quote, you will see Cipro has a very long shelf life if kept cool.

“Caouette said an example of one of the drugs with an extended shelf life is ciprofloxacin. ‘It’s a broad spectrum antibiotic that’s used to treat many different bacterial infections, and also happens to be a medicine that can be used to combat biological warfare.’”

“The military has large quantities of this drug. So much so, in fact, that the manufacturer will not agree to take back the drug for credit when it expires, as they do for civilian users. ‘So rather than wasting it, we’ve put that product into our shelf-life extension program and have the FDA conduct the testing to see how long we can use that material past the labeled expiration date,’ he said. In the case of ciprofloxacin, the original expiration date was 1993. With the testing the shelf life has been extended to 2001 and further testing may extend it further.”

As I point out in by book (and have experienced in real life), having alternate antibiotics on hand is not necessarily of value unless you also have someone around who is qualified to diagnose.

In the course of my work I go through a lot of hospital pharmacies. All of the controlled drugs are in safes and would be VERY difficult to get without a cutting torch or explosives.

And you’re right, they have supplies but not a massive hoard. In a really bad situation it would probably be cleaned out by those working there.

“And you’re right, they have supplies but not a massive hoard. In a really bad situation it would probably be cleaned out by those working there.”

Exactly. If medicines do not come into the country, no hospital/pharmacy will have any.

Here’s another place that would get hit/robbed immediately :o):

I had an extended family member at my house a few weeks ago, and we went to Specs Liquor store not far from my house. Specs Liquor has stores throughout the greater Houston area. When he walked into the store, he stopped and was amazed at how large it was. The back of the store looks really far away and from side to side it is huge. He said, “If the country collapsed, this would be the first place to get robbed!” I said, “One of them would be me grabbing all the Amaretto.”

I was surprised he said that as he is generally a liberal and thinks all we have to worry about is global warming. I guess it took a huge liquor store for him to see the likelihood of a store being mobbed with looters. :o)

Stealing anything isn’t part of my plan, let alone a liquor store.

Although if its a matter of survival anything is possible. I mean if I run out of single malt scotch I may get desperate.

Another method of increasing your supply of drugs; If you are on a medication and your Dr advises to to cut back your daily intake, do it but continue buying your regular amount. Slowly you will build up a decent supply.

>>A cool, dry place is best to store drugs.<<

Someone forgot to include the word “dark”.

“To me, the worst situation for the people is hospitals are running out of medicines and people can’t get blood pressure meds or diabetic meds, or cancer treatment and no meds of any kind means necessary operations stop. No medicine means many more deaths. That type death is coming right at you and you don’t have to be protesting to drop dead due to no meds.”

Ah, yes, and at this point these poor souls have lost control of their immediate situation, and it may at some point be that way here too. But ‘THESE POOR SOULS’ voted the evil genius’s into office, just and has been done here. Will the sheeple ever learn?

Prepping is absolutely necessary for survival. Here it is still not too late, but time is running out. These things you cite here, Marcella, are worse because they are dependent on the medical establishment. Our prepping needs to emphasize alternative approaches to health. It leaves it in our own hands and we can accumulate what is necessary for survival now without being dependent on doctor’s prescriptions etc.

Sad situation for sure. Scary to thing my meds might come from China.

My Insurance doesn’t allow refills until I am down to the last 3 pills. I get all my meds filled on the same date. Each month, when I get down to the forth pill, I put in an order, and pick it up the next day. Put the 3 pills into a reserve bottle.

My Doc wrote me a script for a 90 day back up supply on my original blood pressure meds, which I just took to a different pharmacy and paid for it with cash.

“Consider your medicines – which ones are critical to keep your heart beating and your blood pressure low enough you don’t have a stroke? We’re talking life and death here – which ones are critical to stay alive?”

And there are alternative, or natural approaches for these ailments too. There are also natural approaches that can begin to reverse these things. There are proven natural remedies for cardiovascular disease, metabolic disease etc...and yes, also for cancer.

I have a friend who is a nurse, who actually kept the doctor’s office going when the Doc became old and feeble. Plus I have a number of different Books I bought from the Med. School Book store in St. Louis.

There are also several sites on the internet that can help. The best thing in to keep clean, and have good nutrition so as to prevent sickness to begin with.
