One of the things I've been waiting for in the general computing world is to have cpus that are programmable on the fly (ASICS?), so you could have one programmed to be a compute core for encryption, one for DSP or something, maybe one for some graphics, etc as you need them.

Operating systems would have to be built to specifically take advantage, but I could easily see Linux being up to the task. Something like a modprobe could load up pre-defined cpu instances for tasks rather than simply modules. Rather than loading a program, you'd load a CPU. There are all kinds of things you could do with a system that was flexible enough.
