A Paper Plane that Flies, not just Glides
YAHOO News ^ | Wed, Dec 11, 2013 | David Miller

The paper airplane is more than a piece of folded paper that glides and turns before hitting the ground--it’s a classic part of growing up. We all made them, some that worked well and others that tanked immediately after takeoff.

They’re a low-tech fixture in a high-tech world, so when inventor and pilot Shai Goitein created a module that turns the classic paper airplane into a Bluetooth-enabled smart phone-controlled paper airplane, he risked stomping on nostalgia.

But the PowerUp 3.0 is so simple to understand that instead of messing with a classic they’ve brought renewed interest to the paper airplane, and just in time before every kid gives up their notepads for an iPad.

It looks like a lot of low priced fun mixing old technology with new.

Things like this are a great illustration as to why Central Planning is usually so inefficient.

I love it!

You need to use fly paper.

Relatively low cost and easy to conceal. I can see these things becoming a nuisance during NFL, NBA and MLB games.

Sounds good to me!

A few modifications and you’ve got yourself a drone.

I’ve been making paper airplanes like that (minus the power) since I was a kid. Far superior to the paper darts everybody else made. A good paper airplane has lift in the wings, and is balanced. The true test is, what happens when you throw it from a 10-story window?

Any electrical engineers here?

I am thinking of buying one of thoise “hexacopter” kits and taking all the wiring off and putting it on a large scale model of the same thing with the biggest electric engines I can put on it

Any one see any logical reason why the electronics would not work this way?

(not the power for the electric motors- the controller circuts)

A paper airplane that requires a $699 smarttelephone (free, if you’re a fool signing a 2 year contract) to fly? Where can I get one?

“Things like this are a great illustration as to why Central Planning is usually so inefficient.”

Not just inefficient, but it would never cross their mind to build something like that.

Why a fool for signing a contract? I was shopping around for a new plan that was prepaid. Some look to be much cheaper than my current family plan. But when you factor losing the phone upgrades and how I was getting $400 to $500 discounted off a new phone this last upgrade cycle, I didn’t quite see the benefit of switching. We all use smartphones btw.

When I worked in China in the 70s, the entire country had one architect building gray slab buildings. They also sold one electric table lamp — the same lamp across the entire country. Why would you possibly need more selection than that?

We have grandchildren. It’s revenge time :)

The second to the last time we drove out to CT, well meaning grand-parent age friends loaded our young children with sweets and then gave them kazoos just before the trip back.

That was topped by a friend whose children were given a Karaoke machine by the grandparents. Brrrr ....!

Frankly, I don’t understand your post. No matter, you always end up paying the full price for the telephone.

“When I worked in China in the 70s, the entire country had one architect building gray slab buildings. They also sold one electric table lamp — the same lamp across the entire country. Why would you possibly need more selection than that?”

You could then make the case that they were indeed efficient. Which would lead one to conclude that efficiency is not the most important attribute of a system, especially a social or political system.
