What Was Charles Dickens Really Doing When He Wrote 'A Christmas Carol'?

Since you ask me what I wish, gentlemen, that is my answer. I don’t make merry myself at Christmas and I can’t afford to make idle people merry. I help to support the establishments I have mentioned: they cost enough: and those who are badly off must go there.” “Many can’t go there; and many would rather die.” “If they would rather die,” said Scrooge, “they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population.”

Waiting until Dec. 24 so we can watch “A Christmas Carol” starring Alastair Sim. Best one out there.

My Favorite Rendition of a Christmas Carol is the first one I experienced.

My Mother Taped Mickey's Christmas Carol off the TV (remember used to need a VHS Tape!) and we used to watch it every year.

He was demonstrating the sort of literary brilliance - and certainly spiritual conviction - that we simply don’t see anymore in this world.

End of story.

My favorite is George Scott. Shockingly this year I have not yet found it even on satellite. Lots of Sims.

The columnist could have mentioned that it was first published in 1843, since he alludes to schools of thought to set the contextual age that would have produced “Scrooge”.

I have to say I was enthralled by the Mr. Magoo version. Really and actually. I’ve seen it several times, but not in the last ten years or so.

I saw the Scott one. It was okay I suppose. I just liked that old style filming and acting that you don’t see today. Today it’s all graphics. Back then they had to learn lines. I did a search on Amazon and the first ones to come up were with Scott. You can watch it instantly from them.

Interestingly enough, the Muppet version is the closest to the book.

I like to watch it and watch all the things going on in the background. It is sort of a movie within a movie.

We technically still have it on video. It was a TV movie in 1984, I remember it well. Truly great acting by all, better than the others if you ask me. By far the best “Tiny Tim”, because he actually WAS tiny and very young, unlike all the others, and truly seemed like a regular yet special child by his natural acting.

What bothers me most about Scott’s is the omission of some details which can be important, such as what he ate before seeing the ghosts, knowing who his housekeeper was, and why he hated Fred so. This is more apparent in the other movies.

He doesn’t seem to address directly the claims it is really socialist.

I do tend to wonder about that view. But sometimes Scrooge was right - why pay more charity when his money has already been taken for it? And indeed that is what happens when taxed - people spend less on charity. Stop the welfare taxes and people start contributing.

I was taught that the celebration of Christmas was nearly dead until Dicken’s book came out and revived it, commercialized it.
