I gotcha covered! I have a red ‘97 MIM Strat (maple fingerboard; IIRC Knopfler’s guitar has a rosewood fingerboard) with Texas Special pickups in it. Played clean, it has almost the same exact tone as Knopfler’s Strat on “Sultans of Swing” if you select the bridge and mid pickups.

I remember reading an interview with Mark Knopfler wherein he mentioned he still had a 3-position switch on his Strat; he thought it sounded better than a 5-position switch (which became available from Fender in 1979). I don’t see how; both switches are identical as far as the electrical parts are concerned.

"That is one of my favorite solos of all time, my favorites being some of David Gilmour’s."

100% agree. Gilmour's solo on "Pigs" is one of the best ever, IMNSHO. He and Knopfler are about the most under rated guitarists in rock.

As far as the kid goes, I'm definitely impressed! That's a hard solo to learn, and it's amazing that he's grasped some of the techniques he has at such a young age.

Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!

I never appreciated the difficulty of that solo until watched him play it. WOW!

Amazing kid.

Gilmour’s second solo on “Dogs” is my favorite.

Ditto that!

“Telegraph Road” is Knopfler’s masterpiece...some great live verions on YouTube with Pick Withers on drums before he left the band.

Amazing how a Brit penned probably the greatest song about the downfall of Detroit.

LOL - that is a bit ironic considering UK is heading down the same path.

A bit of socialism when he says, “I got a right to work” without recognizing the reason jobs were leaving.

GREAT guitar work, though.

Thank you gator! That is far and away my favorite.

My wife’s cousin who’s been playing since the 1960s told us he thought he’d try that one. He said something like “it can’t be too hard, I can follow the notes - few passes and I’ll have it...” Well (he said) overconfident or what? He got through it the first time and said he was surprised: “My fingers hurt.” His estimation of Knopfler soared then...

That's a good one, alright. I'm a huge fan of the entire Animals album...I think they hit their stride in the DSOTM-Wish You Were Here-Animals era. The Wall had some good solos, but I think those three albums were some of Gilmour's best work.
