I wasn’t aware of a legal entity of any of the Six Nations in the United States. The Six Nations backed the British during the American Revolution, so the King gave them a reservation in Ontario after the war.
As from the local area, I would like to set the record straight. Although many of the tribes did fight with the British, the Oneidas are known in history as "Our first allies" and fought beside General Herkimer at the Battle of Oriskany and also fought at Saratoga.
I mention this only in support for the Oneida Nation and not Mr Halbritter. Utica/Rome,NY area has been hit hard the last 20 years with the loss of manufacturing and a devistating closing of Griffis Air Force Base. The Oneidas created Turning stone Casino employing in the thousands with decent paying jobs for the local area.
By the way I am of Portuguese decent and I don't have a drop of Oneida in me. Just a local who has a deep interest in the Mohawk Valley's history.
