I was surprised to read this about the Indian culture, just as I was surprised to find out the same holds true for American black culture.
I had no idea they judge each other by the color of their skin - what a shame there is such racism within different races.

I had no idea they judge each other by the color of their skin - ..I had a girlfriend in the Phillipines that I used to take to a resort in the Phillipines in 1970, called Blue Beach. I liked the sun and water. I bought a bikini for her and told her to wear it when we were going out on a boat or beach. She always threw a towel or a robe on herself. When I asked why? she said “I don’t want to look Black.” I couldn’t explain that a tan(?) made her look extremely vivacious. She got killed taking a boat to Cebu to tell her family she was getting married.
