Skip to comments. Why Miss America could never have been Miss India

There have been many ugly tweets and other nasty comments about the new Miss America, Syracuse, NY born and aspiring cardiologist Nina Davuluri. The former Miss New York is of Indian descent; many of the negative commenters thought she was Arab and/or Muslim. Not so incidentally there were also many positive tweets and comments.
Paradoxically, according to Malika Rao writing in The Huffington Post, Davuluri would never have won a similar pageant in her parents' native India because she was too...dark. Yes, even in India, skin color is important--the lighter the better.
But there was an unfortunate irony to the win, noted mostly by Indian and Indian-American writers. Davuluri is dark-skinned. In India, where skin color is a national obsession, you likely wouldn't see someone of her complexion in a pageant, much less winning one.
Writing at FirstPost, Lakshmi Chaudhury quipped that Indians prefer their beauty queens "vanilla, preferably accessorised with blue contact lenses."
And to get that vanilla shade, beauty contestants in India, and apparently other women, take some drastic steps. In a previous Miss India contest Every contestant was "taking some sort of medication to alter her skin, particularly in colour" according to the embedded writer, Susan Runkle. Indeed, the winner that year, Sonali Nagrani, looks more European than Indian.

Blues/Country “rock and roll” simply mean ‘50s and ‘60s to me, not white.
Constitution and liberty are enshrined in this country for everyone, that certainly isn’t white to me whatsoever (unless this is 1856 and it only applied to white men)
You are going to find more whites from age 15-25 listening to Drake, Jay Z, Diplo and T.I on their IPods and occasionally Kenny Chesny (who of course does some great collaborations with rappers like Nelly, are dating a non-white and generally have a more lassiez faire keep gov’t off my personal life approach to things.
As with everything, the culture is evolving. Miss America represents that
If it weren’t for left wing media dredging up these comments from wherever they found them, I’d never have heard them. no one I know has spoken like this nor anyone on the sites I frequent.
“What culture was celebrated in the talent competition by the new Miss America?
Only one of a million little cuts but a cut none the less.”
Bollywood dance. Other recent winners have won with opera, ballet, hula, and more - talents that are not “American” in origin. I don’t see the performance of Bollywood dance in the Miss America pagenat to be a “one of a million little cuts.”
Why does it matter to you what color is applied to which part of the culture?
How does that change the fact that the new Miss America has almost nothing to do with Americans.
You rent that time machine out? If so, how much?
How does she not have anything to do with Americans?
Because she does a bollywood dance? Do you get out of your house anymore?
Again, Americans are more likely listening to JayZ, and Kanye West than whatever nonsense you talked about in a previous post.
She has nothing to do with OLD Americans.
I see you’ve just taken to insults since you failed at painting those who disagree with you as racists.
Back to the minors for you...
One day you’ll be able to differentiate between insulting a person and insulting an argument they make.
Sadly, your arguments weren’t very good and got what they deserved from me
no doubt she is a hottie... but honestly, having been to India many times... there are lots better looking than her. I am not joking.
She sailed across the stage on her knees at one point. I didn’t realize she had pads on while watching it. At the time I thought, “that’s gonna leave a mark.” I get it now.
RE: Knee Pads?
I am tempted to ask Monica Lewinsky if she bought one of those.... :)
All I got was lame “You’re old Whitie” nonsense...
Reading comprehension my friend.
Lets try this again.
How is Miss American not in touch with American culture?
Wearing a sari?
I am really curious what you think American culture in 2013 is
I got it. You’re pretending the kids (since anyone else isn’t a part of American culture according to you) are all doing Bollywood dances & wearing long flowing robes.
Once you let go of this fantasy we’ll talk.
So define American culture in 2013
Now lets talk about what history tells us that will usually leads to...
“Where de white women at?”
