Okay, we sort of know which countries have the best food. Nations like Italy, China, and Japan. But here is an unusual question: Which country has the worst food and why?
Until recently I would say that the British Isles has the worst food. Boiled and overcooked is NOT the way to prepare most food since it cooks the flavor right out of it. However, in recent years food has reportedly improved in that part of the world.
So which country NOW has the WORST food in the world? And please give reasons for this if possible.
That’s interesting; I’d imagine the main difference would be stuffing ingredients available. I’ve seen similar things with different names, but the pasties I’ve gotten resemble a large empanada (almost a foot long). Some of the ingredients resemble what you’d have in shepherds pie.
What foods do you like best here in the US?
Cajun and BBQ would be American foods though based on earlier French and Spanish influence.
Where is there an Arthur Treachers in NJ.
I live in Monmouth County? I haven't seen one in over 20 years. Last one was was in Neptune city just north of the Belmar Bridge. Wasn't bad white fish.
I grew up part of the time living with a Filipino family. Thought I'd read the thread before defending good 'ol delicious Lumpia. Looks like you've beaten me to it. :-)
Filipino cooking tip: make three times as much as you think you'll need- people will constantly infiltrate the kitchen and filch them.
BTW, the iron mining in your area is what shut down the mining in ours; the ore out there was more abundant and purer. Most of our mines shut down shortly after the Civil War (throughout the war they supplied West Point Foundry with iron for Parrott guns and ammunition, as well as swords and shovels); a few lingered into the 1920s.
I hike around some of the abandoned mines; a number of Cornish and Welsh worked them (only foundations and abandoned cemeteries are left where they lived, in land taken over by NY and NJ as parkland). The more recent mines employed Slovaks and Italians as well.
Some years back, there was a description of a perfect Europe (pE) versus a nightmare Europe (nE) and listing which countries are best for which tasks. I have been trying to find it but no luck so maybe one of you can find it and share it.
An example of pE was French cooking while nE was Italian Government and British cooking.
Canada. Outside of Tim Hortons, there isn’t much I would want to eat.
Mostly southern but the wife is a great chef and she is Italian.
You should find them in highway rest areas and mall food courts where there is a Nathans; the Arthur Treachers are part of the Nathan’s now. The nearest one to me is the Willowbrook Mall in Wayne NJ.
They aren’t stand-alone restaurants (even within the mall/rest stop), and the sign will only say “Nathan’s”. The lighted menu above the register dedicated one part to Arthur Treachers (hush puppies, fish & chips, cole slaw), the background of that section of the menu is the Union Jack.
I always thought I would try anything once. I even ate chitlins once. But one look at balut and I said “I’m not putting that in my mouth.”

Now, this is the best they've got. You need to try out a Korean smorgasbord to sample everything. You'll love it -- this is why Koreans never get fat and always have nice white teeth.

In Spain, they don’t cook food properly, and then they let flies land on much of it for a few days before serving.
In Dominica. Everything is washed in their dirty water. All you can eat before you spend 2 days in your room.
Food safety comes first for me. But then I won’t eat restaurant food anywhere, if I don’t have to.
One night we left and went to the pub for a mince (burger). Still got to play Muirfield, which was why we were there in the first place.
If you have never tried it, sign up for a Caribbean cruise in January. It is mercifully mild weather, the sea has so many shades of turquoise I have never seen anywhere else, the scenery changes every day, and the main even on a cruise ship is fine dining. They offer you 4 main entrees and 4 dessert choices with every meal and never see the same item twice during a 7 day cruise. And if you do not like any of the entrees, you can always order the basic broiled steak or chicken breast.
Someone was dissing Fish and Chips. They should try beer battered walleye or any type of walleye.

There might be some on the Parkway or Turnpike; I believe one of them has Nathan’s in their rest stops.
I've been doing that for over 40 years. You should see the kids fight over the crisp pieces of turkey flavored bacon.
I will differ with those that say the worst food is in the UK. Maybe Ireland or Wales, but not England. In recent years ther has been a movement to rediscover the food of the true England, country fare. It’s pretty good and getting better.
The Irish have some pretty good stuff, but the English food is horrible.
Fish and Chips are usually fried in something that can be easily called “Death Oil”.

Japanese families on average probably eat sushi once a month . Variety of foods here is super wide and almost all yummy . Even my Mom , who doesn’t eat fish and is somewhat fussy , raved about the dishes she ate when she visited some years ago .
Don’t want to go on a cruise. We are planning to go on a Canadian Rocky train trip and stay at the rail moguls hotels. We want my 2 great granddaughters to get a little older. They are 4 and 5 now. We want them to get old enough to remember it. My late husband and I had planned to go on the train trip but he died of liver cancer before we could. The next March I got to thinking about that trip. I talked to my daughter, grandson and granddaughter to see if they wanted to go on the trip or get the money after I am gone. Each said trip. We flew to Seattle a few days before getting on the train. We saw WA, OR, ID, MT and WY. We had a blast and we still talk about that trip of a lifetime. It was a trip of a lifetime since GrandLuxe went out of business the next year. My grandson celebrated his 21st bd on the trip. He is a very talented pianist and played the train piano. He had a lot of fans on it. We hate to think we could not have gone if we had waited. My lesson was to not wait if we really want to do something. We are not promised tomorrow.

I’m not generally a fan of Filipino food, but the best flan I’ve ever had was made by Filipinas. Silky smooth and softer than Mexican flan. This was from two different cooks, so I’m assuming it’s Filipino style, not just one person’s recipe.

The Pudim de Leite that we have down here in Brazil puts any nation’s flan to shame.

I will admit that I like canned salmon that has the bones, I like the way that they crunch when you chew them. That’s as close as I can get, however, to a dish like Balut....
I’ve never been to Great Britain, but my son did about 25 years ago. He said all the food had a very distinctive and unpleasant taste, even the MacDonald’s.
Now the only thing that I can think of that would cause that is something in the water supply. Can anyone enlighten me?
Tropical peasant countries — Mexico and Ghana come to mind. They fry everything in disgusting oil at high temperatures. Blech! In their homeland, their houses don’t have glass in the windows or doors in the doorways, so they don’t notice the horrible cooking fumes, then they come here where we have air conditioning and heating, and fill the living space with poisonous stink. Never, ever, let a third world peasant cook in your house.

I didn’t sample the Devon pasties (none available in Cornwall), but the locals said you can tell a Devon pasty from a Cornish one by looking at the crease. The Cornish pasties are creased on top while the Devon pasties are creased on the side.
By the way, Britain has the same sort of problem with illegal workers as we do. On our way to Scotland from England, we passed a farm field with a lot of people pulling things out of the ground. My English bro-in-law said probably every person we saw in the field doing the grunt work was either an illegal, from eastern Europe, or both.
Have relatives there. Visited in early 70s, mid eighties, and mid-90s. Not much difference from us anymore. Used to be terribly bland, led by the ubiquitous “salad creme” salad dressing, which was basically mayonnaise.They still have fish and chips shops (excellent) like we have sub shops, and things like Scotch eggs and pork pies. But otherwise, their supermarkets are indistinguishable from ours.
In the seventies, there were no supermarkets, and people shopped daily at the local butcher, baker and candlestick maker.
I remember three wheeled cars from that era, too. It was very exciting to me as a kid. Sadly, their cars are indistinguishable from ours. Theirs have gotten bigger, and ours have gotten smaller.

But seriously, the Welsh meat, potato, and rutabaga pie is pronounced with a short A not a long A.

I'm watching a marathon of "BBQ Pitmasters" on Destination America (Dishnetwork channel 194) and would beg to differ with you.
Although BBQ didn't come out of America's abundance (quite the opposite, really) it is uniquely American, a culinary art form, and killer tasty.
Tibet is the worst, from what I’ve heard.
I worked for a five-star resort in Hawaii and most of the housekeeping staff were Filipino. Employees had their own lunch room. We could brown-bag our own meals or eat free from their cafeteria line, and most of that food was excess from events held there. Five-star resort = five-star food.
The Filipinos chose to bring their lunches comprised of I-don’t-even-want-to-know-what. It was so gross that eventually they were asked not to do that any more. Shiver.
As if I needed another reason to visit Brazil...
I have. Still don’t know what it taste like... it did stay down... a lotta rum and gallons of San Migal(sp)beer helped.
