As a female field grade officer in the Nuke functional area, she has never seen any combat and never will. She probably hasn't even been deployed the past 10 years.

By "patch envy", she probably means that she has no deployment patch on her right arm, so everybody knows the good Colonel has never deployed.

I guess for a colonel that’s kind of humbling when you are probably surrounded by patches in the Pentagon, and she’s been in since probably ‘84. It doesn’t decrease her commitment or sacrifice, though. Still think she’s da bomb.

Yeah...I’d really avoid anything that looks “combat” or “campaign” related for someone like that...it’s almost like mocking to give her something like that.

It really doesn’t matter if she were in the “nuke functional area” all that much. There were a lot of officers pulling duties in Afghanistan that had virtually nothing to do with their primary job back “home.”

One of the younger officers I used to supervise and fly with was killed in Afghanistan a few years ago leading a “reconstruction” team.
