That BBC performance was somewhat poignant for Pink Floyd fans because Syd Barrett, showing so much promise and brilliance, began his long descent into schizophrenia not long after. There's the Syd Barrett era, and there's the Roger Waters/David Gilmour era. People who came to know the band due to popular exposure are surprised.

But, Barrett was very influential. “Shine On You crazy Diamond” of 1974 was written as a tribute to him. It's hard to say whether he was just another tragic casualty of the excesses of era, or if a breakdown was inevitable, but he's one of the prime examples.

If you're a fan of the show “Boardwalk Empire” listen to this again, then listen to that amazing theme song. That riff is clearly Barrett-inspired.

The Brian Jonestown Massacre - “Straight Up And Down”

This would be the original from which the theme of Boardwalk Empire was drawn. The band itself is very interesting, very talented and at times very odd, lol. They’ve veered off into experimental sounds on occasion, so they’re breaking new ground but as the name implies, they’re also very referential. A tongue-in-cheek liner note claims that they’re the reincarnation of Brian Jones come back to wreak havoc and seek revenge against Mick Jagger and The Rolling Stones.
