Fox is reporting Mitch Mcconnell is working on a deal with Harry Reid on the filibuster.... If this is true I may give up the R next to my name. It means nothing anymore...

Because its a hell of a lot easier for people to instantaneously assume the worst and panic. That is Free Republic nowadays.
Democratic majoritarianism is the antithesis of liberty.
I’m referring to Webster’s first definition, lower-case “r”.
The Republicans in the Senate give ground every step of the way. I can’t remember the last time they stood up and said NO!
Join the Non-Party.
I registered indy in 2007.
It’ll get to the point that someone with an R next to their name can’t win an election.. then maybe they’ll learn.
It’s the new norm,media approved.
No one, I repeat no one could be this cowardly and lacking in self preservation skills. There has to be more to this.
Those who disagree will be sent to re-education camps in China.
Not the best, but based on comments made by people on this forum, it seemed McConnell gave up everything and totally capitulated.. He didn’t.. Credibility goes to hell when people overact..
Agreed. There’s no way. It doesn’t add up.
I read it and I don’t like it.
I have been a registered Republican since Ronald Reagan ran in his first primary.
What I am currently witnessing exceeds even the gutless and traitorous display of non-support for Barry Goldwater by the “Rockefeller Republicans” back in 1964.
Boehner and McConnell are caving in on EVERYTHING and ANYTHING they can and getting NOTHING in return. Obama has drained them of the little testosterone they possess. This allows Boehner to control the Tea Party COnservatives in the House and Reid to control any Republicans who get out of hand in the Senate.
The GOP IS the GUTLESS OLD PARTY. Unless these people can be flushed out of office somehow, a new political party is needed and people like Boehner and McConnel can slither over to the Democrats where they belong.
IS THERE REALLY ANY REASON TO REMAIN A REPUBLICAN?
Seriously, why should we remain Republicans?
McConnell and Boehner are subreptiles.
Just look at Congress where we are in charge....yet fail to hammer the opposition. The GOP think this is old-school politics. The liberals know this is war...and are attempting to annihilate us....and they're winning.
I agree with your comment but I think most people are upset because it is capitulation after capitulation and we are being told by our GOP masters to eat the crap sandwich and be happy - it could’ve been worse.
“Once we have a GOP prez and senate, this will work to our benefit.”
This is aimed at ensuring what you say will never happen.
That question needs to be posed to Mcconnell.
McConnell’s failure (and of the other Republican Senate and House leaders) to reign in spending initiatives by Bush and by Republican Congressmen during the years that they controlled all three levels (Jan 2003 to Jan. 2007), is enough to have disqualified him from ever remaining in the Republican leadership. He is a big government hack who sees his role of gagging and binding his felllow Republicans to make sure they “go along to get along” with his buddies on the other side of the aisle. McConnell is poster boy for everything that’s wrong with Washington.
Sun rises in the East-Republicans cave.
Doesn’t sound like Harry got much of anything.
Of course McConnell’s job was to give Harry much, much less than his crazy-liberal bloc wanted so they would be unhappy with Harry.
This sounds like it might do the job (pending further info).
It’s like not every Muslim is a terrorist but every terrorist is a Muslim.
at the risk of repeating known information. there is no effective representation for conservatives in D.C. (our representation is at the state level and below where it exists). this has been the case for the greater part of 100 years.
thanks to tea party individuals acting at the grassroots, there is now a small group of senators/representatives present in D.C., able to monitor and perhaps influence what the ruling elite statists in both parties are doing. i estimate that presence at between 5 and 10 senators and 15 to 20 representatives. that’s it.
thus, logic dictates that the answer for conservatism is outside the two party elites, working at the state level and below for non-partisan, conservatives. e.g., sheriffs, judges, local officials, while picking off RINOS and squish R’s when opportunity presents and replacing them with true conservatives.
i believe a third party will eventually emerge, if the country still exists by then, from an ‘none of the above’, other, decline to state, group of conservative (God fearing) ‘independents’, who are geting near a plurality in the electorate, and already acting already as members of a defacto a Conservative Party.
The agreement creates a way to speed up the process for limiting debate, or invoking cloture, once the bill comes to the floor.
Basically neuters Republicans.
There is no reason anymore. If I could change my registration, I would but my state doesn’t register party. That said, I’ve stopped giving and have removed myself from mailers. when they call, I politely explain that, after being a strong GOP support for more than 20 years, being a BPOU precinct chair, running for more county party leadership etc., I am no longer a Republican. I am a Conservative. The party is no longer Conservative and I’m tired of settling for the lesser of two evils. So I won’t do it anymore.
“Once we have a GOP prez and senate, this will work to our benefit.”
Yeah, good luck with that. From 2002-2006 was the first time since Hoover that the GOP controlled all the legislative branches and the presidency. How did that work out for us?
We gave in then too!
He told him you can basically get on the train or stay off but the train is leaving make no mistake about it.
Basically, he was saying if he played ball with the agenda, his life would be pretty nice. No guarantees for him if he didn't get on board.
That, in a nutshell, has to be basically what it comes down to with these guys. They feel they can't stop this new communist world order and they want to secure their and their families place as elites in it.
We’ll have to see the actual agreement, not just an anonymous leak.
But what is described isn’t caving in on the filibuster.
The Republicans have been filibustering things they would never have done before, simply because Reid has taken up all the amendment slots.
According to the news article, the agreement involves leaving 2 slots for the minority party to propose amendments (note that once you have a slot for an amendment, you can put as many of your individual changes as you want into the amendment). In those instances, apparently some part of the filibuster will be waived, although you will still need 60 votes to get the legislation to the floor, so you can still block things.
My guess is some things we don’t like will pass, that wouldn’t have passed before; on the other hand, the filibuster was never designed to create a 60-vote requirement for all legislation, it was an outgrowth of the infinite debate concept in the senate — that you didn’t vote until everybody had a chance to say something, and that meant a single senator could talk “forever”.
The senators got lazy, so instead of having to talk forever, they made rules to simulate the ‘talk forever’, which actually weakened the ability of an individual senator to stop things, but gave more power to the party apparatus (which is the true shame of the senate, that everything is geared to the two-party system, rather than every senator representing their own state’s interests).
Invoking cloture is still always available though.
The effect I see from it is that people will have fewer opportunities to invoke cloture- yet they will always have a chance to do it on any bill.
From the link above:
“... the package falls far short of what a group of more liberal Democratic senators had sought, it should accomplish one of Reids stated goals: allowing business to progress more quickly. In no case, however, will senators lose the right to force a 60 vote supermajority vote on bills and nominations as provided under the existing rules.”
A pro-reform aide I spoke to was agog. Right now, you have to negotiate with McConnell to get on a bill, he said. Tomorrow, if this passes, you still need to negotiate with McConnell to get on a bill. It changes nothing on how we move forward.
I think that’s a big part of it. They are selling out their country for a nice, comfortable life.. while the rest of us suffer.
I know that third parties don't work (historically), but I'm wondering if the exodus of Conservatives and Independents will be large enough to destroy the GOPe, while being strong enough to form a new alternative to the GOPe?
The only political power we currently have is being able to change who we support...either financially, or as an active party member.
Funny they agreed to these rule changes the SAME day that an assault weapons ban is being introduced..
It still takes 60 votes to cloture on the bill.
Same as yesterday.
And frankly if that gets through the House, Boehner should be tarred and feathered AND we should all just call it a day too.
Most DC politicians are drunk with power because they face no immediate consequences for their actions and the media cartel uses their propaganda machine to praise the anti-Americanism coming out of DC. Culling those in DC through the election process can’t be relied on due to the level of fraud that taints the system. Obozo in the WH proves that fact. It’s obvious what’s left for we the people to do and the power elite fear it and are working over time to take that last bastion of freedom from our hands. With regards to the real purpose and intent of the Second Amendment, the old phrase; use it or lose it has never been more true than it is today.
Scandinavia would suck but you can eek out an existence. Not my idea of living but not tree bark soup either.
I am thinking the "plan" is Scandinavia on steroids but like all leftist plans, it goes horribly awry and we end up with Mao's China/North Korea.
Get a grip. Quit crying. I’m not sure I trust you anyway.
It’s just a few tweaks in the majority’s favor, adjustments the GOP will also take advantage of when they take back the senate. Boehner declared 2 months ago that anything that comes to the House as a result of senate rule changes would be DOA, so Reid didn’t have a whole lot of muscle in the first place.
The basic filibuster rule stands. It will be interesting to see what the Republicans got in return.
Make no mistake the plan is Scandinavia but we’ll end up like North Korea on the way to this “global society”
Um, not sure where you've been, but it hasn't meant anything in about 20 years, if not more...
