I studied for a week during my commute to/from work. I take a commuter train, an hour each way into Chicago. At the end of the week I took my Tech and passed 35/35. All I used was the ARRL's "Tech Q&Q" study guide, a small paperback. Reviewed the questions and answers to pass the test.

I did the same thing for my General, passing 49/50.

I'm now studying for my Extra and will be testing next weekend (I think...) Of course, the Extra's harder.

If you want it bad enough you'll find the time. ;-)

Want me to post a picture of my tower & antenna's for some extra "motivation?"

What you can't see in this picture is the whole 2m/440 Vertical at the top and the 6M loop I've added since this was taken. The old StarDuster M400 that's cut for 6M/10M is no longer on the rooftop either.

C'mon now, get that ticket!

Yup, it isn't very hard. Someone once told me they studied during the time they spent sitting on the throne. I used the ARRL book back in '82 for the General written, then they still gave the tests at the FCC office and the questions weren't published. Aced it.

I didn't study for the Extra at all, didn't even look at the question pool, took the test on a whim and I passed.

Nice little tower there us. I'm still stuck in temporary quarters so I'm sort of handicapped on HF. I have a SGC coupler underneath a wet noodle, I still make contacts and it is still fun. Get to stretch out more on field days, then we really party. I love just throwing wire and operating portable, out away from all of the noise.

My elmer, about 15 years my senior took his Advanced when he was 14 back in around 1968 I think it was. That's when there were still Novice, Tech, General, Extra and Advanced classifications. He took his test in the FCC's Chicago office when it was a written and verbal exam. Boy, that had to be something.

I didn't study for the Extra at all, didn't even look at the question pool, took the test on a whim and I passed.

I've heard about guys like you. Take the Extra right after the General and pass I had no such luck. In fact, I took mine after studying my arse off and missed by 2! I was so mad I walked out (rather than try again right there and then) and hadn't been back since. In retrospect: not smart on my part.

If you're willing to prove your license class and know how to install Ham Radio Deluxe for remote operations, I can give you temporary access to my station. The only two things I have left to automate are rotor control and amplifier control. Other than that, I can turn the radio on remotely, change frequencies, tune the antenna's, key up and transmit from anywhere as long as I have my iPad and internet access. Kinda cool.

73's!

jcl and MVS — strangely many of the techies I work with now have never heard of this, but they know of ruby on rails...

Yes they seem to be. I had the station packed up,we were going to move but changed plans and I got it set up again last weekend. Conditions are better than they were earlier in the fall. I still don't get a lot of DX with the wet noodle though!

All I have is the wet noodle and it is not up since a storm last spring.
I need to redeploy that 66’ thing.

EF-40 is what I have. pretty good general purpose antenna and 40m is the sweet spot.

I got a 35 foot mast that I was gonna hang that and some VHF UHF and a perhaps a tunable loop off of, but I have never had time to sink the thing into the ground.

I have thought about getting one of the MFJ loop tuners to play around with. Of course you can put a loop close to the ground. The EF 40 is a good antenna. Though they don’t hold up under a lot of transmit power, a matching unit can be built which will handle more.
