Depuis trois ans— literally since 3 years, so 3 years ago.
Pendant trois ans— literally during (for) 3 years.

I think best sentence structure for this:

J’etudiais le francais pendant 3 ans il y a 34 ans.

What a beautiful and precise language. Too bad about its government.
