In Iran, the first law that Komeini had passed when he took over from the Shah was to reduce the age of marriage to 9, citing as his example the marriage of Mohammed to Aisha.

They can marry at 9, but cannot consummate until the age of puberty (I would assume first period).

Still weird, but I guess it makes sense to them...
