The New Orleans Hornets are expected to change their nickname to the Pelicans as early as the 2013-14 season, numerous sources told Yahoo! Sports.

The Hornets planned to change their nickname since Tom Benson, owner of the New Orleans Saints, purchased the team on April 14. Benson also owns the rights to the nickname Pelicans.

Nice.

Pelicans are much more to Louisiana than hornets are, and a stunningly beautiful bird.

I applaud this choice, Mr. Benson.

For real? Ya can just do that? Real original.

Myrtle Beach will be pissed.

And even moreso, the name Jazz belongs in New Orleans.

Maybe they should call themselves the New Orleans Mormon Tabernacle Choir until Utah gives them their name back?

During the 1940s and 1950s New Orleans had a baseball team in the Southern League (AA ball). They were the “Pelicans.” I remember them well.

No, I am from Lousisana, I have watched pelicans many times in my life.

I am in awe of them as they fly without a single flap of their wings for what seems the entire length of the causeway bridge using heat rising off the concrete to keep them effortlessly aloft at an elevation of about 6 ft above the outer rail just out of reach of passing vehicles.

It’s simply a beautiful, unique animal, and I cannot imagine a more majestic Lousiana animal that the team could be named for.

I mean, it is certainly preferrable to the New Orleans Nutrias...

And they have big, yellow scary teeth. =,,=

You’d think they would try to get the name “Jazz” back from Utah.

I saw a big man get the living hell beat out of him by a pelican when he tried to pull it in to cut the line short after it had snatched and swallowed a fish he’d caught on his hook. It would have been funny but the guy was clearly hurting.

The New Orleans Pelicans actually started playing baseball in 1887 and died out in the late 1960’s with a brief revival in the late 1970’s.

Now if New Orleans could trade the Pelican name to Utah all would be right in the NBA world...

The name Hornets belongs in Charlotte.

And Charlotte really should give it back to Greensboro.
