ST. LOUIS, MI (WNEM) -
A local family is still shocked after what happened to their beloved pet. They say their dog was shot and killed at the hands of a police officer.
The shooting happened Saturday in St. Louis, Mich., in Gratiot County.
Lori Walmsley, a neighbor of the family who lost their pet, says she saw the incident.
Walmsley says she was outside playing with her own dog when her neighbor's golden retriever, Scout, ran over into her yard. She says she called the dog over to play, which Scout did, and then Scout ran back over back into his own yard. That's when Walmsley says a police officer showed up.
Walmsley said the officer asked if the was dog hers. She said "no," but told the officer Scout wasn't dangerous. She says the officer tried to catch the dog, who apparently didn't want to be caught. The dog tried to run away and when cornered by the officer, let out a little growl. Walmsley says she couldn't believe what happened next.
"I heard 'pop pop pop pop pop,' and I thought, 'what is going on,' and I [saw] the St. Louis Police Department standing over my dog," said Scout's owner.
"He just started shooting him, he just kept shooting him in the head," said Walmsley. "I said, 'What are you doing? He's just a puppy!'"
The dog was taken to the vet were it later died.
The witness says the officer wasn't provoked and she doesn't feel his reaction was warranted. Scout's owners were inside their house during the incident.

So let me get this straight. Telephone repairmen, utility meter readers, postal carriers, Fed-Ex and UPS deliverymen, lawncare and pool maintenance workers all manage to do their jobs without mace, pepper spray or firearms and deal with housepets every day of the week in their line of work. How is that possible?

I read the police report - I would encourage others to click on your link and read it.
It’s beyond insane — if only the police would show the same dedication to go after criminals, as this policeman showed trying to catch this dog, there would no criminals left on the streets.
Apparently he spent a significant amount of time trying to find the dog, after it ran across the road in front of his police car.
Your tax dollars at work.
He should be fired.

No, they should let the family (or someone else willing) deal personally with this piece of crap, in their own manner of choosing. This sort of behavior by armed government employees should not be condoned nor tolerated. What is that old adage about the three S's...? Call me, I'll do it. (I'm a dog breeder, and have no stomach for this sort of thing. It makes me so d@mn mad I cannot see straight.)
When a cop goes trigger happy in an American residential neighborhood..... no big deal.
I've said it before: the military has tighter Rules of Engagement in Taliban territory than American cops have in American neighborhoods.
This happens all the time all over the country. I’ve become a cop hater because of it.

This was just an exercise to show the neighborhood who is really in charge. Good brave cops demonstrating their community ‘protect and serve’ moto and get in some good realistic target practice.
Six shots and only wounding the puppy! Call the nearest animal rights lawyer and have an animal cruelty charge brought against the Pig, as this is a case of a cruel animal being cruel to another animal.
This no good SOB cop should be fired and serve time. He killed a damned puppy. And since when are cops also dog catchers. He said in his report he had to hit his brakes to keep from hitting the dog. He didn’t want to run over the dog but he sure as hell didn’t mind shooting.
He also said he whistled and said “Come here, pup.” And the dog complied. Then he says the dog growled at him. God, I hate people like this. And I’ve worked with people like this the short time I was a cop. A bunch of them loved to show their power and loved confrontations. As long as they were wearing a badge.
Indeed, and it’s worth repeating.
I have had it with these stupid cops. There is no reason for them to be doing this.
Intimidation. It’s deliberate.

Any moron cop who would willfully shoot one deserves to be fired immediately.”
Any cop who shoots a playful, non threatening dog not only deserves to be fired immediately and must have issues with dogs in general. Also psychiatric counseling is needed and perhaps jail time as well.
Indeed; such an officer cannot be trusted among the public; When the “thrill” of shooting a golden retriever (or any other dog) is gone, the public runs the risk that a person will be his next victim.
