These things are always nothing but popularity contests, and trying to objectively rank musicians across varying genres as if they were athletes is nuts anyway. That said, most of the right names are on the list somewhere (and I'm very happy to see Alex at #3!)

Larry Carlton (think Steely Dan) comes to mind.

Frankly, the greatest guitarists were likely playing well before this thing called rock and roll was over represented in the list of the top 100 guitar players.

But I think most of us know what this list really represents - the top 100 most popular guitar players to readers of Guitar World, having next to nothing to do with the 100 best guitar players (given no objective criteria exists).

I took a closer look at the list and noticed that Steve Lukather didn’t make it. Neither did Larry Carlton.
