Actually, the 67 Dee-troit riots also were confined to a small area. I can remember suburbanites expecting the rioters to march up Woodward Ave. and were busy getting their guns ready. However, the miscreants just trashed their own hoods.
I suspect the Detroit riot would have burned itself out within 24 hours if there hadn't been outside agitators helping to keep it going. After all, Bill Ayers and friends were just down the road in Ann Arbor at the time.
