I once had a friend who lived in a cul-de-sac of 6 homes. All of the families got along great and their kids 'owned' the street with bikes, skates and a hockey goal. They even had an unwritten rule that whenever anyone BBQ'd they would do it in the driveway and all the neighbors would often join in.

One of the residents was transferred and the family that moved in was not at all compatible with the others. They were of latino heritage with an unemployed older son and two unmarried daughters living at home with children of their own. They had boy friends who were there a lot and the street was cluttered all the time with lots of visitor cars in addition to the five or more the family owned. The visitors were hostile and aggressive gangsta types who intimidated the neighbors.

It didn't take long for everyone to start selling and moving at reduced prices. The once wonderful enclave was gone forever because of one jerk neighbor.

I was sort of in the same boat but with a happier ending.

Neighbors built a beautiful house but they were as described in the above article. (Shooting guns off the back porch in the middle of the night, riding ATVs everywhere, kids in and out of jail, not paying their share for driveway maintenance, etc).

One day a couple of flatbed trucks were seen leaving with all of their possessions. The house has been empty and decaying for a year and a half and is unlikely to be sold in its poor condition.

But it’s nice and peaceful around here now. Ahhh.

We were going through some old family pictures over the weekend and I threw out the ones of when we used to have neighborhood potlucks in our yard. Liberals have moved in and think they rule. Now days, there are no potlucks and I prefer not speaking to any neighbor.
