an opossum attacking his bulldogs in his backyard. If this is real (and not a South Park "he's coming right at us" defense), then my first though would be that the opossum was rabid. They may hiss a little when disturbed, but opossums generally retreat from any threat.

It is highly unlikely that the opossum was rabid as their body temperature is generally too low to harbor the rabies virus. There has only been one instance know of a rabies infected opossum.

You're right. If the possum actually attacked anything, it was more than likely rabid.
