NCAA imposes stiff penalties on Penn State
Philadelphia Inquirer ^ | July 23, 2012 | Jeremy Roebuck

Posted on 07/23/2012 8:24:17 AM PDT by Zakeet

College sports' governing body today suspended Penn State's football team from postseason bowl play for four years and fined the university $60 million for its handling of the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal.

The team also must vacate all wins from 1998 through 2011.

"The career record of former head football coach Joe Paterno will reflect these vacated records," the NCAA said in a statement. "Penn State must also reduce 10 initial and 20 total scholarships each year for a four-year period. In addition, the NCAA reserves the right to impose additional sanctions on involved individuals at the conclusion of any criminal proceedings."

The fines are to be paid into an endowment for non-university programs preventing child sexual abuse or assisting victims, the NCAA said.

"The NCAA recognizes that student-athletes are not responsible for these events and worked to minimize the impact of its sanctions on current and incoming football student-athletes," the statement said. "Any entering or returning student-athlete will be allowed to immediately transfer and compete at another school. Further, any football student-athletes who remain at the university may retain their scholarships, regardless of whether they compete on the team."

Ironic isn’t is. It was sandusky’s charity that got them all into this trouble in the first place.

Not strong enough.....$60 million is one year of income from football. The death penalty would be more fitting. SMU paid some players and got the death penalty. This bunch at Penn State KNEW about children being molested and said and did nothing so their coach could get a record.

No not even close. I also read the Freeh report and thought it was written in a factual non-partisan manner. There were many paragraphs written obsolving Paterno in the Freeh report.

My biggest problem with Paterno in regards to Sandusky is that there is no evidence that Paterno nor his superiors ever looked into the well being of the victims. He wrote emails and made phone calls but never asked about the where abouts of the child. That child could be dead for all we know.

Talk about rewriting history.

It's clear at this point that the sainted Joe Pa and co. covered up Sandusky's despicable crimes, and they should be held accountable for them. But you're correct: vacating all those PSU wins *is* rewriting history, and IMO, has a whiff of Stalinism about it.

Regardless of how much we despise the actions/inactions of certain people, the past is the past. No matter how much he tried, Stalin was unable to erase the names of Trotsky, Bukharin, Yezhov, et al. from history, and all of us that are riding our indignant high horses are not going to be able to erase Joe Paterno's name and the successes of his teams either.

BTW, Paterno is getting a bum rap. (MO)

I guess everyone except JoePa is entitled to due process.

For over a decade, "JoePa" woke up every day and made the decision not to call the cops on a homosexual pedophile predator. That adds up to thousands of bad decisions.

JoePa may not have received the prison time he so richly deserves on this earth for enabling a homosexual predator, but I'm sure that wherever he is at, that he is feeling the heat for letting a monster roam his precious football facilities and campus.

My question is who in the NCAA had prior knowledge of this, heard the scuttle and did nothing as well—like report what they heard to police?

Well..then how about trying him “in abstentia’?
the evidence is there. Paterno will get due process when his Employer, PSU will have the ability to refute any allegations of Paterno’s involvement in upcoming trials.

Guess those boys that were molested and raped didn’t have the opportunity to file charges when they were children to stop the abuse...Now THAT’s no due process!

True Dat. I don't even want to think of how many times my Dawgs have been in the running for or won the "Fulmer Cup" the last few years.

I think the way they practice fumble recovery drills at UGA is to tape a joint to the football and toss it on the ground.
