Time Magazine's Breastfeeding Cover: Moms React
Yahoo ^ | 5/10/2012 | Lylah M. Alphonse, Senior Editor, Yahoo! Shine | Parenting

Does this cover go too far? (Photo: Time.com)The headline reads, "Are You Mom enough?" But if that wasn't enough to fan the flames of the Mommy Wars, there's the photo that goes with it: A pretty young woman wearing skinny jeans and a tank top, nursing her nearly 4-year-old son. It's meant to illustrate a story about Dr. William Sears and attachment parenting but, given that there's more to that movement than extended breastfeeding, it seems as if Time magazine was going for sensationalism and shock value.

It's working.

Gotta cover those ear lobes and eyes too. They have every bit as much to do with sex as breasts do.

Somebody’s going to be scarred for life.

I’m sorry but if you’re toilet trained and have teeth, you damn well better not be sucking on mommy’s booby anymore.

Nobody has any business telling a mother when to stop breastfeeding her own child. That is the mother's decision, and nobody else's. Anecdotally, I have a very close friend whose wife nursed her son well into his three's, and the young man is one of the most intelligent, well-balanced individuals I have ever met.

Just because most mothers may stop much earlier doesn't mean there's some kind of scarring which occurs, unless it be the mother's poor, tooth-abused nipples.

I'm not aware of any evidence that prolonged breastfeeding causes any social or developmental disadvantage whatsoever. And even if it did, there's quite enough social engineering going on in this country already. I'm quite confident that we don't need a national debate about this. Or even a forum debate, for that matter...

That is funny! I remember feeling so bad for our friends who could really not hold their grandchildren. Any decent idea gets warped when taken to extremes and w/ no room for change. The whole family are academics & I have a feeling that this theory skews white, middle-upper middle class, & advanced degrees.

On the other hand at my school many of the kids get no parenting.

From the article:

Photographer Martin Schoeller says that the photo, as well as the portraits he shot of other attachment parenting moms nursing their kids, was inspired by the iconic religious image of the Madonna and Child.

. . .

Well, it makes more sense now.

In another thread, I said that I thought that the pose was degrading to both the mother and son.

Now we know that it was meant to be.

Hmm... seeing as this story is not about breastfeeding babies, why are you telling me all of this? I didn’t make any comment about bottle-feeding either. The alternative to breastfeeding for children of this age would be more like... hamburgers, hot dogs, mac & cheese, would it not?

>>> "No you are just a freak."<<<

Think I was right....you did forget your meds. But, I see you finally took them, as N-O-W I'm "just a freak". Earlier you said I am a "freak, as well as a moron".

See what happens when you come back down to earth......I'm no longer a moron.

Any time you need help in the future, all you have to do is contact Doctor jmax. I've good rates: I'm not cheap, but I'm not expensive, either.

I can’t find any pic of 0bama and/or Clooney on this thread. ??? “Ton of pics” seems like a strange statement too. There aren’t very many pics here at all.

not sure if anyone else has said it, but I surmise the mother doesn’t even have any milk left...she looks kinda small up there to still be nursing. She might just be a big pacifier!
