My first lab ate a couch while I was at work one day.
I came home and the entire living room was covered with stuffing. He entered the hole he burrowed and was sleeping in there like a bear in a cave.
My husky-lab-shar-pei cross did the same thing.
Actually, he just ate the love seat (everything but the frame and springs), plus the cushions and part of the front of the couch. At 2 1/2 years (about fifteen minutes before reclassification as a target), he stopped tearing stuff up, overnight, and at five he's the best dog I've ever had or been around. 115 pounds of beautiful muscle and love. Crate broke, pickup broke, doesn't need a leash, and can go sixteen to twenty hours between "breaks," except for the one exactly forty minutes after he eats in the afternoon. It don't get no better.
A little over-protective of our 15-month-old granddaughter, though -- he doesn't think we should let her do anything. He tries to herd her out of the river (in water eight inches deep, with a sober adult within three feet) and he keeps her (the granddaughter, not the sober adult) within ten feet of the porch in the back yard.
