Needed: A web site where I can look up a movie with just a vague description of its plot
Vanity ^ | 04/02/2012 | Vanity

Posted on 04/02/2012 6:22:55 PM PDT by Sarah

I have been looking for ages for the titles for two movies, and I only have a vague memory of the basic premise or plot: One: a small town, where the sheriff (or mayor) and the whole town are so crooked that they bet on anything, and they end up betting the who treasury on the results of a fight that they go to more and more ridiculous ends to cheat and win. (the word 'dog' in the title?)

Two: An old B/W movie where a man and his lover scheme to drive his wife crazy, setting up horrible scenes of death etc. only to clean up the signs later. (like this he can have her committed, and marry the lover.) LOL I guess 'no fault' divorce wasn't an option. (or money was involved...)

Anyway, I can't find a web site that caters to my needs! Can anyone help?

My wife and I think the B&W movie may be “Gaslight”, but the first one.. Are you sure it’s not a documentary of Chicago ?

Not sure about a website for you. Have you tried to remember the name of an actor? That way you could go to IMBD and search that way.

Now for your second movie, that sounds like a remake of Gaslight. And Doris Day did a movie similar to it called Midnight Lace. Regardless, it sounds like a fun plot!

On the aforementioned IMBD, in the search bar where it says “All”, you can narrow the search to “plots” with the drop down.

I have had great results from both google and yahoo on these tyes of searches. IMDB’s search engine sucks, but if you google something, it usually finds the correct IMDB link.

The second movie sounds a little like “Gaslight” in which Charles Boyer tries to make his wife, played by Ingrid Bergman think she is losing her mind. I don’t remember it including anything really gruesome though.

I don’t know of any website like the kind you want, but you might have luck just asking in some movie website forums.

I once asked a friend if there were reverse dictionaries, where you could find out if there was a word for what you wanted to say, She said there were such guides, they were called “parents”!

There is no website that describes THAT kind of movies. And once Rick Santorum is elected he’ll ban them all!

Although it’s not an exact match (the woman being driven insane was not married to the man), the second one could also be Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte.

That movie even made gaslight a verb.

“They are trying to gaslight her”.

Great movie.

The second one may be “Diabolique”, French with subtitles.

Had some gruesome scenes intended to drive wife to madness and an eventual heart attack.

The best way I have found to get answers to strange and obscure questions is to just make a vanity post on FreeRepublic.com and you will usually have your answer in less than 20 responses.

Plus a hundred or so snarkily sarcastic jabs at your obvious lack of internet savvy.

Pretty easy, you are thinking of Star Wars and Pulp Fiction.
You’re welcome.
