Check out the story about the teenage girl who shopped at Target and used their savings card.
It turns out she was Pregnant and their computers figured it out by the vitamins she was buying. They started sending her advertisements for baby clothes and other baby products.
The Dad saw this and got very angry and complained to the local store manager. A few weeks later he had to apologize.
I have nothing to hide, but my business is my business. Best to keep a small footprint. Of course by posting on FR we are being tracked to a certain degree.
Yes, that story was a hoot. I was particularly amused by Target's response to customer ire: they learned the value of camo, as one Targeter explained:
“With the pregnancy products, though, we learned that some women react badly,” the executive said. “Then we started mixing in all these ads for things we knew pregnant women would never buy, so the baby ads looked random. We’d put an ad for a lawn mower next to diapers. We’d put a coupon for wineglasses next to infant clothes. That way, it looked like all the products were chosen by chance.
To be fair, however, this was not Google. This was Target diligently mining their own sales data.
