I can’t imagine anyone else in the role, either. And I grant you, he was a movie star.
But there’s no denying that Bogart was a lousy, stiff, one-note actor. Claude Raines, Ingrid Bergman, Peter Lorre, et al, held him up all through the film.
You're way off base. Bogart could play a variety of characters. Check out his Fred C. Dobbs in " Treasure Of the Sierra Madre" or his Queeg in "The Caine Mutiny." Bogart was excellent in those extremely dissimilar roles.
