One of the biggest, current, issues is the inability to play Netflix streaming content on Linux.

If that is the biggest problem the article author has, he should consider buying a ROKU or similar box to stream Netflix. Such boxes cost about $75.

A bigger problem I have found in trying to run Linux is its inability to recognize much of my hardware/peripherals and my widescreen LCD monitor.

When was the last time you tried? What distro? Ubuntu/Mint are pretty great at recognizing everything out of the box.

Once upon a time, long, long ago that was a problem with old distros. I'm using an HP laptop (widescreen) with a second widescreen monitor with my desktop spread over both screens. SUSE11.2 works just fine.
