Attackers Using Google Image Search to Distribute Malware (quit browser with Ctrl-Alt-Delete)
PC World ^ | May 6, 2011 | Ed Oswald

Attackers are now using Google's image search to distributed malware, security experts say. Thousands of sites have reportedly been compromised by code injection--the malicious code redirects users to fake antivirus applications.

Internet Storm Center researcher Bojan Zdrnja writes that the attackers are mostly targeting Wordpress sites, and are injecting PHP code that generates pages with images based on highly-searched content. Google then indexes these pages, and the images show up on Google's image search.

What can you do in the meantime to protect yourself if you feel that you have visited a malicious site via Google Images? Security experts recommend not trying to click your way out of it. Instead, quit the browser application using Ctrl-Alt-Delete.

I’ve seen it a number of times but in each case I get out of it by killing the (Chrome) tab.

No one using Firefox + Noscript should be vulnerable to this.

The fake anti-virus programs are quite nasty. I first encountered one on a client’s PC last fall- the newer ones will block genuine anti-virus installers, Firefox install (virus writers just love IE), add/remove programs and the registry editor. I don’t bother with AV tools to deal with them- instead I boot to safe mode, remove registy values that redirect EXEs or popular AV programs, track down and delete the offending program then install AVG Free. At $40 for 45 minutes’ work, I’m tempted to thank the virus creators for the spike in business I’ve seen.

After a crash, Firefox offers the option of restoring the previous session or starting a new session. Restoring a crashed session is NEVER a good idea because it will return you to the page that crashed it.

Yep, the Queen of Canada graces the old paper $1, $2 and $1000 notes and is also on the current $20 note. I remember a quote from a cop who deals with counterfeiting describe how he spotted one batch of fakes: “Her Majesty looked like she had been to an all-night party.”

Got a link to this GoBack program? Sounds like excellent insurance.

My version is really old. Now that I checked, I’m not sure they even make it anymore. It was part of a Norton Security Suite. There are new products out that do basically the same thing.
