There was a link in my original post, my friend.

It just did not get highlighted, due to my posting clumbsiness.

Here it is again:

This is not about honoring one man for outliving his peers. It’s about honoring the souls of every fallen soldier and telling every living soldier that his sacrifices will not be forgotten in death. I’m blubbering like John Boehner.

Considering the asshat Wilson, patriarch of the ruling elite, got us into that war we had no business being in, Mr Buckles deserves this honor. I too have lost what little respect I had for John Boehner Blubber Bear.

(Thinking I'll send Boehner a box of Kleenex along with the letter...)

Boehner lost my respect when he told us that TARP was a crap sandwich we were going to have to eat.

I wonder if it had anything to do with the Westboro Church decision....

In my opinion, lying in State at the Capitol are always politicized events.

We honor our military heroes at Arlington, surrounded by their fellow warriors.

I would wonder why you would respect him to begin with?

Apology immediately accepted.

One of these days, I’ll post something without any spelling or linking errors. Then I’ll just sit back and watch pigs fly past my window.

I have to say, I’m with the Speaker on this one. Full military honors from the very best of color guards should be a given, though. And a flyover would be okay too.

These occasions are either authorized by a congressional resolution or approved by the congressional leadership, when permission is granted by survivors.

Unknown Soldier of World War I
November 9-11, 1921. Chosen to honor and perpetuate the memory of the heroes who gave their lives in World War I. The body was that of an unknown American who served as a member of the American Expeditionary Forces in Europe. Congress was in session, 67th Congress, 1st Session. No resolution.

“Disgusting”? Nonsense. Had this vet died 40 years ago, would he have lied in state in the Rotunda? Of course not. He doesn’t get elevated treatment just because he outlived his contemporaries. Ease off.

I don’t understand why there would be controversy over this.

Why does this guy belong in the rotunda, because he lived to be old? How does that entitle him to rest with Abraham Lincoln.

There is no precedent for putting soldiers in the rotunda just because they lived to be old.

Give the speaker a break

*This is not about honoring one man for outliving his peers. It’s about honoring the souls of every fallen soldier and telling every living soldier that his sacrifices will not be forgotten in death. I’m blubbering like John Boehner.*

If that is your logic, then that mission was accomplished in 1921.

Only 31 people, including 11 Presidents have had this. This should be kept as an extremely high honor of a body of work. This soldier served and happened to outlive everyone else in his situation, but that does not put him on par with Reagan, Gen Pershing, JFK, MacArthur, or Just Rehnquist.

We dont give the Medal of Honor for longevity.

No, it has been for Presidents, Senators, Reps, Judges, and Generals. The only 3 non “heads” of state, so to speak, were two policemen shot in the capitol, and Rosa Parks.
