Facebook users 'are insecure, narcissistic and have low self-esteem'

Using Facebook is the online equivalent of staring at yourself in the mirror, according to a study. Those who spent more time updating their profile on the social networking site were more likely to be narcissists, said researchers. Facebook provides an ideal setting for narcissists to monitor their appearance and how many ‘friends’ they have, the study said, as it allows them to thrive on ‘shallow’ relationships while avoiding genuine warmth and empathy. People who constantly check Facebook may be lacking in self-esteem, a study found.

I have a much better looking person in my profile pic and I've blocked every person I've friended.

LOL!

I agree, the article is a crock. The only thing that is more laughable is for someone to say that this article describes all FB users. Talk about low self-esteem.

narcissistic and have low self-esteem

I'm still trying to square how a narcissistic person has low self-esteem. Kind of opposite concepts, aren't they?

Plus, facebook can be set to private, unlike sites like FR. I”m not knocking FR at all, just saying those who keep bashing it must not really know anything about facebook.

Excellent point, poor writing - lol There is an article today about Mooshelle trying out for the Saints or something...ok she was partying with the bro’s in New Orleans (although Tony Dungy really seemed impressed by her wide stance...) Ok the writer of the article mentioned her “regimented regime”

I let my daughter have a FB account until she accidentally “liked” KY Jelly. Lol! She can wait until she is older.

Just about anything can be turned to dangerous use. FB is not going to be fail-safe, but it can be safe if used discreetly and wisely. Some make mistakes and post things they really should regret and many resent being corrected (even in private mail), but that’s par for the course. It becomes a public square and with the right community one which is simply an extended version of your local community center.

... there are a few negative folk here, at FR, that just bash anything that’s popular ... I just laugh at them....

I use it to get my conservative message out and to bash obama. I’ve converted a few pals.

I like using Facebook to find folks I knew when I was a kid (I’m 45 now). I’ve moved many times over the years ... when I find someone I believe I know and send them a message to ask if “Are you the same person that went to school in Plano, TX at this elementary or middle school?” and when they answer ‘yes’ then it is pretty cool to talk about what has been going on with them over the years.

Per the article:

This may not be altogether surprising as it is widely thought, however contradictory it may appear, that narcissism is linked to a deep-rooted lack of self-esteem.

Another article on the subject states:

A new study concludes that the social network Facebook is popular among narcissists and people with low self-determination.

But goes on to say:

Facebook is a perfect environment for narcissists, who can control the number of “friends” that they have to their credit.

She adds that the website can also facilitate the social life of those with low self-esteem, since it facilitates contact with a lot of people.

And Facebook friends can restore trust a person who has difficulty accepting her physical appearance, such as writing comments about a picture that this person has published, according to the young researcher.

So...I guess the two personality issues could be considered mutually exclusive or inclusive, dependent on how one views the research on the subject.

I must be a weirdo.I have a Facebook account, but I don’t want to ‘friend’ anyone. The word ‘friend’ is used too easily these days. Most of the ‘friends’ on Facebook are just numbers- collected so people can say they have lots of ‘friends’. They don’t know each other, wouldn’t like each other in person. It’s superficial.
I got the page for my niece to have access to games free. That’s all it’s used for except to get updates on things that interest ME, it only goes one way. I read links and comment on nothing.
