"“Nothing is more pleasurable than to sit in the shade, sip gin and contemplate other people's adulteries, and while the wormy apple of marriage still lives, the novel will not die.”
--John Skow

"“Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine.”
--Humphrey Bogart
Casablanca

Gin and its Lowlands cousin Genever (Jenever in Belgium) are white spirits that are flavored with juniper berries and so-called botanicals (a varied assortment of herbs and spices). The spirit base of Gin is primarily grain (usually wheat or rye), which results in a light-bodied spirit.

The chief flavoring agent in both Gin and Genever is the highly aromatic blue-green berry of the juniper, a low-slung evergreen bush (genus Juniperus) that is commercially grown in northern Italy, Croatia, the United States...

Most Gin is initially distilled in efficient column stills. The resulting spirit is high-proof, light-bodied, and clean.

"How about vermouth? The liquor stores around have a couple varieties of Martini & Rossi but that’s about it. Is the Martini & Rossi Extra Dry an adequate choice for martinis or is that falling short of the mark?"

I have read that it is as important to use a quality vermouth as it is to use a quality gin. That having been said here in Springfield Missouri it's all either Gallo Vermouth or Martini & Rossi with M&R being the slightly more expensive. Let's face it...vermouth has one use ordained by The Lord and it's the lower half of a Martini. I think you're fine.

I was not talking about brands of gin, I was talking about sweet, 20-something-girly drinks in bright garish colors made with flavored vodkas. Probably with cutesie little pieces of fruit carved into flowers stuck on the edge of the glass. Or something. Phooey.

"And I'm a bourbon drinker."

49 years of age and I still can't develop a taste for bourbon. It kind of reminds me of my hatred for pickled beets. I look at them and wonder how something that looks so nice can taste so foul. It's all in the palate of the beholder I guess. Cheers to you my FRiend.

or maybe Hendrick’s
++++++++++++++++++++

Just gotta add my .02 worth here. Hendrick’s is so bad....
how bad is it, you ask. Well it’s so bad they recommend a cucumber garnish with it. Ugh. It tastes like cilantro to me and I despise, loathe and abhor cilantro. Bombay Sapphire is the real deal but that’s just MPO.

I would gladly swap you my 4 bottles of Hendrick’s for one bottle of Bombay but since that won’t happen, I’ll just save them to barter for food or gasoline when the economy crashes. ;)

Okay, well at least it’s good to know I’m not alone in having limited vermouth options.

In honor of YOU I promise to avoid multi-colored and multi-flavored sissy Vodka’s for the foreseeable future. :)

I would NEVER have suspected you of being a clandestine drinker of multi-flavored sissy vodka drinks. Especially after you posted that lovely picture of a martini that sent me flying to the drinks cabinet.

"Sorry. Shaken, not stirred. No true martini aficionado would have a stirred martini."

Martini aficionado or a James Bond aficionado? I always heard that shaking the gin bruises it; but, I have found after the first martini, it doesn't matter. Besides, I never could taste the bruises.

I have not had Beefeaters Gin in literally 23 years (don't ask how I know). I honestly can't remember a darn thing about it. I like the label though!

"I think it makes the best Gimlets."

I haven't had a Gimlet since 1983.

I believe I'll crank one up right now for old time's sake.
