Well, since you obviously still have access to the internet, I'd recommend you download whatever the most recent live CD is for the version you want to use. You're much more likely to get better hardware support. In fact, it's entirely likely you won't have to use the dreaded command line at all. I know that last time I used a fedora disk for something like this, I was able to just mount the drive and copy things off right from the gui. Good luck! I know I hate it when I lose data.

BTW: I'd like to take just a moment to point out to anyone else who happens to notice this thread, how marvelously peaceful it has been. Wonder why that is? Anyone... anyone... Bueller?

I downloaded ubuntu and slux last night. I'll create bootable discs when I get home tonight. I can download fedora tonight if you think it would be more useful.

How do I mount a drive under unix. I was hoping I could just click on the drive and use drag & drop like I would under windows. I am also hoping that it will recognize a USB drive without any special machinations.

I'm open to experience and advice.

I’ve downloaded and burned three different live CD versions. None of them have been able to boot so far.
