That was when I first sat before a FCC examiner at the Federal Building on Commerce Street in Dallas.

Same office, 1971. I rode over on a bus, alone at 11 years old. Never happen today.

Tubes, fergawdsakes. Draw a Colpitts oscillator. Identify the grid, heater, and plate.

Rules for novices. 100 watts. Band plans.

Those were the days.

Yep, and they certainly did not give you the question pool. The study guides covered most of the material, but you were pretty much on your own from that.

Far different now. You can pass the exam without understanding the material.

And the GROL, that is another matter. Worst mine field I ever saw. Not a test of understanding but a set of hurdles. Very tricky multiple choice questions. That mess seperates lots of men from boys.
