Like you I am most heartily in favor of civilian space exploration, in fact I would like space exploration to be predominately civilian, what I can not see is that the civilian organizations are even within a decade of true inter solar system exploration, they have neither the tools nor the profit motivation to make it happen, I wish it were otherwise.

What I do see is the Chinese steadily developing maned systems that threaten our leadership in manned exploration, this does not mean that I expect that to always be the case, I fully expect our civilian tech to out do them in the long run, but civilian companies are not charged with the defense of the Nation, nor should they be.

It is worrisome.

Having watched from a distance the fiasco of the Army Future Combat System, I’m very leary of throwing out existing technology and programs for some future imagined “game changing technology.”
