Christian wins thriller with Tiger girls
Fort Morgan Times ^

To say the 36-33 win by the Resurrection High School girls basketball team over Wiggins Friday was close is not to do it justice. Neither side scored well throughout the game, despite many opportunities and tries. Aside from a quick score at the beginning of the first quarter for Resurrection, no one was hitting and it took almost halfway through the period for Wiggins to put the score at 2-2, and it was with 1:30 in the period that the score was tied again at 4-4, but a free throw and a last instant basket made it 7-4 for the Cougars. That set the theme for the game, which was at 17-12 at halftime. The Tigers would catch up and then the Cougars would pull away. The main key was that the offense did not generate much of anything in the first half, said coach Jerris VanRoekel. However, his girls showed they could settle in and performed some good offensive screens in the second half, he said. Despite the loss, the second half belonged to Wiggins - just barely. Resurrection managed to build up a 10-point lead in the third period, but Wiggins narrowed that to 2 points with 2:10 left and a last second shot by the Tigers put it at 27-24. The last period saw Wiggins come within a single point of Resurrection a couple of times, finally tie it up again at 29-29 with 5:21 left in the game and catch up again 31-31 two minutes later. It looked like it would all come down to two good free throws by the Cougars’ Courtney Peterson for a while, but another shot by Wiggins put the score at 33-33 with less than a minute to go. Near the end, Resurrection came out of a time out with possession of the ball and 11 seconds to go, but could not get through the Tiger defense. The ball went out of bounds with exactly one second left and the Cougars still in possession. But a penalty for traveling gave the ball to Wiggins with 0.4 second left, giving the Tigers one last chance. A throw from Wiggins from out of bounds went over everyone’s head and out of bounds again to give Resurrection possession. The whole game did finally come down to Peterson as she threw a three-pointer just as the buzzer went off. Peterson scored 11 points during the game and Resurrection’s Ellyn Weaver 10 points. For Wiggins, Amanda Blake scored 19 points, Jayleen Erker 4, Emily Leon 4, Kristy Lindbom 4 and Abril Celis 2. This puts Wiggins at 0-2 for the season. The Tiger girls will play at home against Weld Central Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Admit it. You only posted this for its play-on-words value. :-)

Probably just as much as the author wrote it for its play-on-words value.

Reminds me of a local headline from a few years ago concerning a girls basketball game between Anderson and Pendleton Middle School - “Anderson Girls Overcome by PMS”

OK, Besides the Tiger Woods laughs, did anyone actually read this?

It actually sounds like a great finish!
