Ping to the Weekly Gardening Ping List.

I hope all of you will stop by.

This is typically a low volume ping list. Once a week for the thread and every once in a while for other FR threads posted that might be of interest.

If you would like to be added to or removed from the list please let me know by FreepMail or by posting to me.

If it cools down much more we’ll have snow. I’ve already had two nights in the 40s this week.

My tomatoes will not vine ripen, although there are many of them. I do not know if it is too cool and rainy or what. More rain and cool today.

I have thrips in my tomatoes. I’ve treated with Pyola which has suppressed them, but this is the fourth week of the battle.

I have Biocide, but it can kill bees so I haven’t used it.

Any suggestions?

Gonna be 111 here in S. Utah. I’m going to bed soon so I can work outside early before I start looking like a weenie on the grill!

Figs look good. Grapes are awesome. Lawn is brown (sprinkler problem, maybe). Tomatoes are under shade in my carport, and trying to hang on and ripen. Pineapple guava and bottlebrush are living large in this heat!

It's barely 60 degrees here and calls for mid-50's the next few nights. My tomatoes won't ripen, my zuchini won't zuke, my okra won't oak, and it's a contant battle with the fungus. We've had only 5 days of temps in the 90's and have had the AC off most all the time. If this gets much worse it's going to snow.

I want my Global Warming, NOW!

We’re getting a blast of true Eastern Shore, VA summer weather today. The humidity is sky high and even as early at 5 this morning the weatherman was warning about severe storms this afternoon/evening.

Oh fun!

I woke up at about 2am to add covers to the bed; the temperature drop was THAT noticeable here last night...and the fact that I had a Basset Hound plastered to my back side was a good indicator of a temperature drop too, LOL!

Picked 6 lovely squash this morning; I have lots of tomatoes on, and lots of blooms, but no ripening and no more fruit set because of this chilly weather. Pepper plants are small, but producing.

We're going to a ball game tomorrow night; it's going to be darn CHILLY, but that's OK. I prefer that over 90 and humid any day; perimenopause is NOT being kind to me, LOL!

Son is coming over to mow the lawn today and I'll have him dig three more holes for me for my new 'Quickfire' hydrangea. And then I'm done. Honest! ;)

And one clarification; I don't HAVE my MG certificate; I'm still a few credits short, but LIFE and working in the field keep getting in the way. I'm still a few credits shy of my Business Degree, too, but that hasn't stopped me from running multi-million dollar companies, either! I guess I'll just NEVER be employable or useful to others without that sheepskin, Eh? LOL!

Please add me to the ping list.

I am officially a gardener as of 7/11 when I planted my first veggie seeds in white 5 gal. buckets with drain holes, a bottom layer of mulch and potting soil.

This weekend I will be re potting the cukes and zucchinis that are already three inches high. I chose my species and planting times according to my local extension office and have just been amazed by the results.

Here in Jax, we've been getting rain every afternoon so I haven't had to do any watering, but the one Celebrity tomato plant I bought is looking a little pale and I think it's getting too much water. Any advice?

Good morning! We had a good storm and 0.8" of rain last night, which was sorely needed. Wind was high and I'm getting ready to go out and see what kind of damage might be in the garden. Here are few recent photos:

Thanks for the ping! I have been looking forward to it al week. Did you see those cantaloupes? OMG.

Well we have found 3 acres we like pretty well and are making a bid. I am really looking forward to getting out there this fall and getting the ground already so I can be planting next spring. You bet I am gonna be planting some melons like that. Wow. I also like the way he has trellissed the peppers, cukes, and tomatoes.

I ordered Jeavon's book tis week so it will be arriving soon.

Thanks again.

Typical summer weather here on Humboldt Bay... fog in the morning burning off by noon and then back in the evening. The hotter the great valleys get to the east the longer the fog stays here. Temps 65 to 70 with nights 50 to 55. The Red Gold potatoes are all blighted now (common) and I dug 2 hills yesterday that produced 29 small to medium boiling spuds. The blight is spreading into the Yukon Gold now and they are a later producer.

We're still losing the battle of the berries to some critter in spite of the investment in a impulse sprinkler with the motion detector, bird netting and a Hav-a-heart trap. The shop building the metal frame cages ran out of 1/2 square tubing so I only have 2 of the 6 needed to cover with wire and replace the netting. I'm thinking I will have to put wire on the blueberry frame in place of the netting to protect them.

Yesterday the local news station said we had been at or above 100 degrees for the last 30 days. It’s gonna be another scorcher today and on into next week.

To: Red_Devil 232; All

I’m looking for a vegetable that my family grew in S. Fla. years ago and need help, finding it. We called it a “jahote”. It grew on a climbing vine and was about the size of an apple.
Light green in color and had ridges.
Any help would be appreciated.

Oh boy-I just made the best zucchini dish ever! Here's what I did.

I'd picked a little of this and that out of the garden. It's being slow with low temps so there isn't enough of anything to make a regular dish. So I took...

3 zucchini's cut in 1/2 inch cubes
4 okra sliced in rounds
Some leftover cauliflower
1 small can of mushrooms (from emergency supply stash)
2 romano and 1 medium yellow tomato cut into chunks
1 serrano pepper
2 cloves garlic
Italian herbs
Mozzarella cheese (about 1/2 cup)
Butter, olive oil

I put some butter and olive oil into a hot skillet and added garlic and the chopped pepper, and a little salt and cooked it for a bit. Then I threw the chopped veggies in, except the tomatoes. When the veggies got slightly brown I threw the tomatoes in and stirred the mess for a few minutes with some herbs.

Finally, I transferred it into a sprayed casserole dish, put the mozzarella on top and stuck it into a 325 degree oven for 30 minutes until the cheese was browned. It was awful good.

It would be good with other veggies as well, and maybe a cracker or buttered bread topping.
